Note: This article covers both versions of Yumiko appearing in Crossfire and Hellsing. Hirano stated that Crossfire is somehow a connected yet unconnected world. Essentially, it's up to interpretations whether it's canon or not.

Yumiko Takagi高木由美子, alter ego Yumie由美江, is a supporting antagonist in the Hellsing series created by Kohta Hirano. She is voiced by Yuuko Kaida in the Japanese sub and Siobhan Flynn in the English dub.

She is a nun working for Section XIII. A skilled swordswoman, she usually partners on missions with Heinkel Wulf. Yumiko is one of the key members of Iscariot and was an orphan under the teaching of Alexander Anderson, a man she adores more than anyone else. She is also quiet but belligerent; Yumiko's alter ego, Yumie, is also a master of the Shimabara Battoujutsu Techniques and possesses a powerful technique called "Shukuchi."

Appearance[]

She had long, unkept black hair, which became visible when she removed the cowl to fight. Yumiko always dressed in a standard Catholic nun's uniform, which consisted of a black habit, a nun's hooded cowl, a white scarf, white gloves, white stockings held with a garter belt, and black boots. In Crossfire, Yumiko was shown wearing glasses to prevent her more violent personality, Yumie, from coming out. On the back of her gloves, an inscription similar to that of Anderson's was seen. Yumie preferred to remove the nun's cowl, kept the scarf around her neck, and let her hair flow free. Yumie also had slightly narrower eyes and could usually be seen with a maniacal grin. She also carried her Katana, holding the sheath in one hand and the blade in the other when in use. She wielded the sword in either hand.

Personality[]

Yumie was impulsive and violent, showing no fear of anything and preferring to negotiate using the sharp end of her Katana. She seemed to genuinely enjoy killing those who opposed them and monsters.[4][5] She was loyal to her fellow Iscariots but didn't hesitate to argue with or chide them for actions she disagreed with.[6][7]

Duality.

Yumiko (left) and Yumie (right)

In Crossfire, her personality is a bit more explored. Here, we see that Yumiko has a split personality:[8]

  • The gentle, violence-hating Yumiko, who's timid and quite innocent.[9]
  • The ultra-violent Yumie, who'll gladly kill sinners without remorse.[10]

In more detail, Yumiko was a shy, quiet nun who got easily frightened, whereas Yumie provided raw, unfettered violence with her nigh-superhuman strength, fearlessness, and fearsome Katana skills that made her the ideal partner to Heinkel.[11][12] Maxwell often berated the pair, not because of their excessive violence but rather because of their activities as assassins, mentioned as having been dressed in the raiment's of the Catholic Church, indicating a connection to the Vatican and by proxy to Iscariot, which was supposed to be a secret agency outside normal knowledge.[13]

Both Yumiko and Yumie were devout to their religion; however, Yumie was a fanatical Catholic and seemed to genuinely enjoy killing "heathens" and "unbelievers" with her superhuman sword skills.[14] Yumiko had commented how hard it was for her to "get Yumie to sleep" after she had been provoked into action.[15] Their personalities switched places, either by dueling for control inside of their minds[16] or a strong blow.[17] Heinkel used this technique to awaken the latent Yumie and had her brutally kill several terrorists.[18]

History[]

Yumiko Takagi was raised with Heinkel Wulf and Enrico Maxwell in Ferdinant Lukes, Anderson's orphanage.

She was formally introduced alongside Heinkel after Anderson rescued Integra Hellsing from Millennium troops. The two reprimanded Anderson for his actions but joined him in the battle against the vampires. Afterward, they repeatedly worried and argued about violating orders given by Maxwell to either not interfere or take Integra into custody. Yumie started to draw her sword on Integra and had to be directed by Heinkel to stand down. Anderson decided to walk Integra home, and Yumie became a reluctant part of the escort until Maxwell reached London with the rest of the Ninth Crusade, and Alucard arrived soon after. Yumie and the rest of Iscariot's Armed Priest Vanguard were deserted by Anderson after he helped Alucard's familiars kill Maxwell and stated his intent to fight Alucard. She and Heinkel were distressed and protested his plan after being told to leave.

Yumie was next seen during the battle between Anderson and Alucard when she and Heinkel led a charge of the Armed Priest Vanguard to assist him. They and the others were once again told to go home, but they insisted that it was their duty to remain and join the combat. Anderson eventually reached Alucard with their help, and Yumie was shocked when he pulled out Helena's Nail and turned himself into a Monster. She mourned his death after his defeat until Walter C. Dornez arrived and desecrated Anderson's remains while speaking contemptuously about the man. Yumie was completely enraged and immediately attacked Walter. Although moving extremely swiftly, she was outmatched and cut into pieces by Walter's wires. Heinkel was hysterical and aimed her guns at Walter, only to be shot and wounded by The Captain.

Relationships[]

Allies[]

  • Heinkel Wulf: Yumiko maintained a close relationship with Heinkel, someone she grew up with alongside Maxwell under the care and direct teachings of Anderson.[19][20] Heinkel was also her partner during Agency missions from Iscariot;[21] both were extremely competent duos with skills that, although widely different, complimented one another.[22][23] Heinkel was able to keep her composure when Anderson's remains were stepped on, but Yumiko (now Yumie) went berserk and hastily confronted Walter. Heinkel made a move herself in a fit of anger after Yumie's death, but it was stopped by The Captain.[24] Heinkel later pursued Walter in the name of revenge for the death of Yumie and the discretion of Anderson's remains.[25]
  • Alexander Anderson: Yumiko, along with Heinkel and Maxwell, was personally tutored and taught by Anderson.[26][27] Along with Heinkel, both saw Anderson as their father figure, and Yumiko admired Anderson more than anyone else.[28][29] When Anderson was defeated by the enraged Alucard, his last words were assurance and comfort; he told his students not to weep; his death spurred Yumie. However, when his remains were stepped on and disrespected by the vampirized Walter, Yumie was thrown into a fit of rage and ended up hastily confronting Walter, which resulted in her death.[30]

Enemies[]

  • Walter C. Dornez: When Walter stepped on Anderson's remains, Yumie was greatly enraged, and in the midst of Integra and Walter bantering with each other, Yumie suddenly rushed in and unleashed Zhong Kui on Walter, who countered it without moving an inch and killed the angered Yumie in an instant.[31]

Powers and Abilities[]

Abilities and Skills
Yumiko was timid, but her alter ego, Yumie, was a belligerent swordswoman.[32] Along with mastering the Shimabara Batto-jutsu techniques, she was adept in swordsmanship and a user of Shukuchi.[33][34]

With her impressive strength, she was able to cut through a brute that even Anderson couldn't get through

YumikoSuperhumanStrengthManga

Superhuman Strength: She was capable of smashing men's heads into walls with her bare hands, as shown in Crossfire.[35] She was strong enough to cut through crowds of vampires and familiars without tiring.[36][37] In particular, she was able to cleanly slice through a brute familiar that Anderson couldn't get through.[38]

YumikoSuperhumanSpeedOVA

YumikoSuperhumanSpeedManga

In order to activate Zhong Kui, Yumie turned into a ray of blue light; rushing at Walter, and running past through him

Shukuchi: Yumie was shown to be so fast that she turned into a streak of blue light that even Artificial Vampires couldn't react to fast enough.[39][40][41] This ability is showcased more in depth in the OVA, where she directly dodged a bullet before she sliced multiple Millennium Battalion in seconds.[42]
Swordsmanship: Yumie, in striking contrast to Heinkel's marksmanship, was a superb swordswoman. Even without her battoujutsu techniques, she was able to skillfully slice through familiars and Artificial Vampires with much ease.[43][44][45] This makes a contrast with Heinkel's marksmanship, making them a quite imposing duo among heretics and freaks alike.[46]
Combat Experience: Trained under the teaching of Father Anderson, Yumie went through so many assassination missions under the orders of Iscariot, therefore gaining much experience in the process. When half of the Iscariot's Armed Priest Vanguard died in battle during their first encounter with Millennium Vampires, Yumie was one of the few that survived.[47] Yumie also later survived the encounter with Alucard's familiars.[48]
Shimabara Battoujutsu Techniques
Yumiko knew various battoujutsu抜刀術 lit. "The Art of Sword Drawing" techniques. Techniques she was adept and mastered in includes that of "Shimabara Battouryuu島原抜刀流"[49] and "Shimabara Battouiai-ryuu島原抜刀居合流."[50]
Shimabara Battouryuu
SyusuiManga
Syu-sui秋水:[51] First used by the awakened Yumie against armed terrorists. She drew her Katana, before slashing and dismembering attackers all fast enough before they could even react to her attacks.
Zhong Kui[a]鍾馗しよう き:[52] She approached her enemy, slashed them, then went behind their backs and eliminated them fast enough before they could even react. First and last used by Yumie on Walter, though the ability was countered by Walter's filament, which caused Yumie's death shortly after hastily using Zhong Kui in a fit of rage.
Shimabara Battouiai-ryuu
ShindenManga
Shinden震電:[53] An assassination technique used by Yumie, where enemies were caught off-guard before they were then cut in half swiftly by the user of Shinden. Used by Yumie to start the attack on the compound of Ilyushin.
TenzanManga
Tenzan天山:[54] An assassination technique used by Yumie, where enemies are swiftly blinded before getting finished afterwards; even blocking the attack is futile. Used by Yumie to land the winning blow against Ilyushin, who hopelessly tried to block the attack, causing her knife to get sliced in two while her eyes are sliced, blinding her.

Concept and Creation[]

Along with Heinkel, Maxwell, and Anderson, Yumiko was a character brought back from Crossfire to the Hellsing series. Although the canonicity of Crossfire is left ambiguous with Hirano's contradictions in his statements for the series, including stating that the world of Crossfire is somehow a connected yet unconnected world, Hirano states that Yumie does indeed retain her split personality in the Hellsing series just like her Crossfire counterpart.[55] However, Hirano found it difficult to utilize her split personality in the main story of Hellsing and also thought that there were too many side characters to handle.[56]

Name[]

The Japanese characters for "Yumiko" (由美子) and "Yumie" (由美江) differ only on the last syllable. Many people tend to make the mistake of Yumie "Yumee," pronounced with two syllables, instead of the correct name, "Yum-ee-eh" (three syllables). Yumi (由美), Yumiko (由美子), and Yumie (由美江) are all different names. Yumi, however, forms the base name for both Yumiko and Yumie. Yumi, as written, is composed of the kanji for "Significance/Reason" and "Beauty." The name "Yumiko" adds the character for "Child" to the end (子 ko) — which seems to be metaphorically symbolic of Yumiko, who is more innocent and childlike than violent Yumie. The name Yumie adds the character for "Inlet" (江 e). In the OVA booklets, it's noted that her real name is Yumiko.[57]
