Chief Makube間久部マクベ機関長, Makube kikan-chō is a supporting character in the Hellsing series created by Kohta Hirano. He is voiced by Takashi Taniguchi in the Japanese sub and Jesse Merlin in the English dub.

He is the head of the rival organization of the Hellsing Organisation, Iscariot, as well as the successor to Enrico Maxwell after his death in 1999. He is shown to be perceptive of supernatural matters as he is aware that Seras Victoria's shadow, Pip Vernedead, was there to cover the entirety of the Hellsing manor before being able to seemingly damage him. He claims that Iscariot is not yet prepared to battle on an even field at this time, but when the hour grows close, Iscariot will be there to launch the 10th Crusade.

Appearance[]

Makube is a man of medium build with fair skin. He has droopy eyes with light red pupils and a long scar that goes down from his jaw, to slightly over his left eyebrow. It is unknown where he received this scar from. His blueish light-purple hair, although a little messy and unkempt, is slicked to the back except for two strands of front hair bangs that go down over his face. His eyebrows are of the same color, although darker. He wears a white shirt with a collar underneath a dark cassock robe with a blueish-gray accent. His outfit is finished with matching dark trousers and a pair of black shoes and gloves, along with a cross necklace.[a]

Personality[]

He seems to be much more level-headed than Maxwell was, although he could be equally fanatical; his level-headedness (or at least a healthy self-preservation instinct) comes to surface when Heinkel Wulf suggests a plan to kill half the Round Table Council, at the cost of killing both of them as well. He promptly negates permission and responds that Iscariot is willing to wait another century or two before beginning the 10th Crusade, ruminating it will be a success. It could be argued that he is tolerant, unlike his predecessor.

History[]

He is seen in the final chapter, impressed and clapping by himself, interrupting the celebration at the end of a fencing match between Sir Penwood Ⅲ and Sir Integra Hellsing, claiming he and the Iscariot delegation were waiting, but became tiresome after they were not provided with even a cup of tea. He is quickly sent back there by Integra, who asks him to wait as she could not have Iscariot agents simply walking around, which Makube agrees with. Later, he is seen walking through the hallway and shuts down one of the Iscariot agent's offer to attack the Round Table Council in this dire state, showcasing Seras Victoria's shadow and stating that another hundred or two is nothing as they had waiting for five hundred years for another Crusade. Then, he later proclaims that the tenth one will be a success.

Concept and Creation[]

Makube was based on Azaraku Makube from Advance! Secret Studies of the Cybernetics Research Division, another prototype manga created by Kohta Hirano. It's worth noting that unlike some of the other prototypes, this character's name and appearance are exactly identical to his prototype - where he had much more character development. In his prototype, Makube was a priest who also worked as a theology teacher, and was shown to use black magic and necromancy. He used a pump-action shotgun as a weapon as well.

Name[]

He was previously referred to as "M'Quve" by English fans (named after the Gundam character of the same name). The English translation of Volume 10 by Dark Horse Comics is the first one to refer to him as "Makube." Subtitles of the Hellsing OVA, along with the English dub soon follow. The name Makube is a romanization of Macbeth.
