The MG42 (MachinenGewehr 1942) is a general purpose machine gun designed and developed in Nazi Germany during World War 2. It was used by the Third Reich, as well as the Letzte Bataillon and the Millennium Organization.

Profile[]

The MG42 is a general purpose machine gun, designed to replace the older and more expensive MG34 machine gun, designed with a recoil action and roller-lock system. The weapon is chambered in the 7.92×57mm Mauser rifle cartridge, capable of firing from 900-1,500 rounds per minute, depending on what kind of bolt the weapon is using at the time. It's muzzle velocity is 2,428 ft/s, with an effective firing range of 219–2,187 yd with sight adjustments and 3,828 yd with a telescopic sight and tripod. The maximum range is that of 5,140 yd in a linked belt of 50-250 rounds each, with a 5 round belt drum. While reloading, following constant fire, the MG42's barrel would go hot and needed to be changed out.

History[]

The MG42 was designed sometime following the manufacturing of the MG34, but because materials needed for the machine gun's machined parts became more expensive and scarce, Germany needed to create a new weapon. It was then that a new design came out by 1942 and replaced much of the machined parts with sheet metals, which improved the weapon's rate of fire greatly. The gun would continue service until the end of World War 2 and even then, remains in service to this very day, as well as came to inspire the later MG3 7.62mm machine gun.
