Warrant Officer Luke Valentine 《ルーク・ヴァレンタイン准尉, Rūku Varentain Jun'i》 is a major antagonist in the Hellsing series created by Kohta Hirano. He is also one of the two main protagonists of the Luke and Jan Valentine's Merry Manga supplements, along with Jan Valentine. He is voiced by Takehito Koyasu in the Japanese sub and Patrick Seitz in the English dub.
Elder brother to Jan Valentine and likewise a fearful Millennium agent. A fancy man whose soft-spoken, direct manner only serves to obscure his incredible skills as a mighty vampire. When attacking Hellsing manor, Luke wastes no time in seeking out Alucard to personally duel him in a one-on-one battle to the death with his superb speed and reflexes that earns Alucard's praise.
Appearance[]
Luke was a man of average build and height with fair skin. He had straight, long, blond hair with bangs, loosely tied up with a pink ribbon at the end.[a] He wore silver pince-nez glasses and the same style of military jacket as his brother Jan, although Luke's was black with gold lining under a white double-breasted suit with matching trousers and a pair of white business shoes.[b]
Personality[]
Despite being Jan Valentine's brother, the two were polar opposites. While Jan was socially loud, obnoxious, and unpleasant and murders with glee and sadism, Luke was far less talkative, usually calm, and kills casually. He fancied himself as someone classy, cool, and calm and tried to get Jan to be as "cool" and not talkative and loud to no avail.[3] Luke liked to fancy himself as the one who would bring about Alucard's demise, believing that because of his relatively advanced powers, he was destined to surpass Alucard in every way; in a way, Luke admired Alucard to the point of jealousy.[4][5][6] He believed that he had more than Alucard's powers at his own disposal and believed Alucard to be just no more powerful than an Artificial Vampire like himself.[7]
Despite his relatively serious, calm, and cool outlook, when Alucard's power was much greater and more terrifying than he had expected, Luke cowered and tried to run in fear.[8] In the face of pressure and hopelessness, Luke broke and was terrified. In the face of Alucard's disappointment, Luke tried to insult Alucard back as nothing more than a "Anglican Church's dog" to which Alucard said that if that's the case, he proclaimed, "That makes [Luke] dog food."[9] Confused and dumbfounded when Baskerville died and he manifested, he freaked out before later being wired by the vampirized Walter C. Dornez in order to fight Alucard.[10]
History[]
Not much about both Valentine brothers past, yet unlike Jan, Luke was noted to have his own rank in Millennium as "Warrant Officer." Some of Jan's dialog suggests that he is, or was at some point, a low-class citizen, and this would logically apply to Luke before he was given rank. The brothers were later sent by Millennium to attack Hellsing.
Walking up to the manor with a bus behind them, disguising themselves as a "tourist," this proved to no avail, and they were threatened by the guards, which led to Jan ordering the ghouls to lay waste upon the guard and the gates. They later marched and swept through the desperate Hellsing militants holding the frontlines. Luke later split up with Jan in order to seek a battle with the noted Alucard. During his search, he received a phone call from Jan for status check-ins. Luke later appeared again, smashing through the entrance of Alucard's basement, and announced his arrival.
In the OVA, Luke received a phone call just as he was finishing finding Alucard's whereabouts and his short battle with Hellsing guards.
He introduced himself to Alucard and said that he had been waiting for his showdown with Alucard for a long time. The two later stood in the point-blank standoff after Luke charged at Alucard with his weapon over Alucard's head and Alucard's Casull on Luke's torso. The shot from each other happening at the same time pushed Luke to the ground. While Alucard recovered, Luke drew another weapon and shot at Alucard. In response, Alucard emptied his Casull as Luke dodged each and every shot and backed away, impressing Alucard while Luke reminded him to not treat him (Luke) like all the other instants he's faced.
After another direct shot in which Luke dodged, this prompted Alucard to treat Luke as a real opponent and laugh off his injuries, causing Luke to wonder if immortality is more than a myth. Alucard proceeded to release Level One. The moment Alucard's power was released, a dramatic shift in the battle occurred. It no longer appeared as though Luke had the upper hand at all, and Alucard began to transform into something that no longer resembled a human, completely horrifying and dominating his opponent.
Alucard wasted no time in attacking, bringing the Jackal out of his hellhound's throat and shooting off Luke's legs. After falling to the ground, Luke lost what little of his cool head he had left and began to panic. Alucard pleaded with Luke to call upon more powerful vampiric abilities (having already been impressed by Luke's speed and reflexes) but was disappointed and disgusted to find Luke couldn't even heal his severed legs. Alucard then quips that in life (as a vampire), Luke was a worthless good-for-nothing lump of flesh. In response, Luke called Alucard "Anglican's Church Dog," before the latter interrupted him. Luke later became "dog food" for Alucard's hellhound. Alucard then mocks the demise of Luke Valentine, saying that the latter is nothing more than "dog shit."
Luke would later reappear from the hellhound's corpse with only his upper body free. Confused with this situation, he was quickly killed again by Walter's strings, and he and half of Baskerville's body are forced to attack Alucard. This managed to push Alucard for a while, but he eventually shot Luke and stopped the attack. As Walter goes to stab a severely injured Alucard in the heart, it is revealed to be Luke's body acting as a double. This allowed Alucard to sneak up on him. Alucard then happily remarks at how surprised he is at how useful Luke was.
Relationships[]
Family[]
- Jan Valentine: Given how short their time on-screen together had been, it was hard to say exactly how well the two had gotten along. Obviously, Jan had been very comfortable talking with Luke, chatting the entire way to the Hellsing manor. However, Luke hadn't seemed too pleased with the conversation. Luke had seemed somewhat short with Jan, usually telling him to shut up when he had started rambling. Jan's obnoxious personality had bothered Luke's "cool" and "calm" outlook, sometimes advising Jan to just be "cool," much to Jan's annoyance.[11]
Enemies[]
- Alucard: He was jealous of Alucard, almost to the point of admiration.[12] He intended to challenge Alucard in order to replace Alucard as the "new number one."[13][14] When Luke met Alucard in the sub-levels, Luke seemed quite condescending to Alucard in the beginning but became frightened towards the end, where Alucard killed him. Luke claimed that he would prove that immortality was a myth once he defeated Alucard.[15] After Alucard tore off Luke's legs, Luke referred to Alucard as the Anglican Church's dog, to which Alucard replied by proclaiming Luke to be "dog food," followed by devouring him with Baskerville.[16] When Luke manifested and was used as a marionette by Walter, Alucard commented and praised Walter's marionette while saying that it was a waste to feed him to a dog, implying that he regretted not devouring Luke outright.[17] In the end, Luke was used by Alucard as a means to trick Walter into impaling him as Alucard recovered and defeated Walter, commenting that a half-eaten dog bait was surprisingly good.[18] In the OVA, Luke claimed to be a great fan of Alucard and used to worship him greatly.[19][20][21]
Powers and Abilities[]
Artificial Vampire | |
---|---|
An Artificial Vampire that was dispatched by Millennium with an actual rank as "Warrant Officer,"[22][23] Luke Valentine had a high self-esteem and a great deal of confidence in his abilities and ambition to overthrow Alucard and become the new number one vampire.[24][25][26] His high esteem nature, yet while being calm and undisturbed of what he did, made him a dangerous foe and was able to wipe out an entire force of armored Hellsing soldiers with his unrivaled speed.[27][28] | |
Supernatural Speed and Reflexes: While his brother Jan, with the over-the-top strength and agility, was more of a basic vampire, Luke in particular demonstrated an extreme form of celerity. In the manga, Luke turned into a blur where he was able to dodge Casull's shot with ease.[29] It seemed that this ability needed to be manually activated, as he ran away normally without his superspeed as Baskerville chased him.[30] His ability was extended in the OVA, where he created afterimages of himself and turned into a streak of light while shooting/slicing his enemies; he also could easily dodge bullets and slice his enemies to pieces before they could even react.[31][32] | |
Superhuman Durability and Endurance: In the manga, he apparently took a point-blank shot to the chest from the Casull without visible damage.[33] In the OVA, he survived a point-blank shot from the Casull to the head.[34] | |
Marksmanship: Luke was skilled in sharpshooting, going toe-to-toe with Alucard. In the OVA, Luke combined his precision in shooting with his superspeed, creating afterimages in which Alucard was relentlessly shot at in multiple directions when he couldn't even land a shot on Luke.[35] His precision led to him hitting two clean shots on Alucard within a close-range encounter in the manga[36] and not missing a single shot on Alucard in the OVA.[37] | |
![]() |
Dagger Proficiency: In the OVA, Luke was able to cut down the guards of the Hellsing manor effortlessly thanks to his enhanced speed and reflexes.[38] |
Regeneration: In the OVA, Luke was capable of regenerating wounds such as being stabbed in the chest by spears and being shot in the head by the Casull. His regeneration wasn't unlimited, however. When Alucard shot off his legs, he couldn't heal his wounds and fell short in their battle. His missing left leg was regenerated after manifesting from Baskerville when the former was killed. | |
Extrasensory Perception: Luke claimed to be able to sense Alucard's "chi" even if Alucard was hiding.[39] | |
Biological Immortality | |
As an Artificial Vampire, Luke couldn't age or die of a disease. However, he could still be killed, meaning that his "immortality" was biological. |
Weapons[]
Modified M1 Garand | |
---|---|
A shortened M1 Garand was the weapon of choice for Luke Valentine for much of his appearance in the series. It was a modified version having a sawn-off barrel. In the OVA, the stock had been left intact while the barrel was cut. In the manga, these were somewhat of a merging of the M1 Garand with the M1 Carbine. Luke carried two of these hidden in his jacket and used them to fire two bullets at Alucard during the Valentine Brothers' siege on Hellsing manor. Although he did not miss, and it was very close range, Alucard was almost unharmed from the encounter. |
Walther PP | |
---|---|
The Walther PP is a series of pistols manufactured by Carl Walther GmbH Sportwaffen. The semi-automatic pistol operated using a simple blowback action. The PP was designed with several safety features, some of them innovative, including an automatic hammer block, a combination safety/decocker, and a loaded chamber indicator. Luke Valentine hid a Walther PP concealed under his sleeves as a last resort. In the manga, it's an original pistol designed by Hirano. |
Other Weapons[]
- In the OVA, Luke used a Bowie Knife to cut down a group of Hellsing guards who had ambushed him.

Trivia[]
- It is interesting to note that the nationalities of the brothers are never made clear, although it seems they are from the United States, judging by their dialogue in the manga, which is devoid of British phrases such as "wanker" (which at least Jan would've used at some point), or, if they were thought to be British, the fact that they aren't at all fazed that one of Millennium's plans is to wipe out London in what can be thought of as a terrorist attack.
- The booklet of the second OVA noted that despite their claims of being "brothers," it is unclear if they are actually related.
- Despite the fact that in the manga, only Jan's hat is present in the Valentine brothers' shrine, in the OVA X, Luke's curved knife appears as his shrine.
- Luke Valentine is the only member of Millennium to be killed by Alucard exactly the same way in every incarnation of the series (manga, anime, and OVA).
