— Jan Valentine, responding to his brother, Luke, Hellsing Episode 5: Brotherhood
Jan Valentine 《(ヤンヴァレンタイン Yan Varentain》, along with his older brother Luke, was a vampire and minor antagonist in the Hellsing series.
The younger brother of Luke Valentine and the Valentine Brothers' Ghoul Army Commander. Jan and Luke own a club that was used to hire vampires, and he was probably responsible for the creation of the infamous female vampires. Both he and his brother serve under the orders of Incognito and his Master.
He was voiced by Kazuya Nakai in the original Japanese dub, and Josh Phillips in the English dub.
Appearance[]
Physical[]
Physically, Jan looks like a young man in their early 20s. He had dark skin, amber eyes, and dark hair. He's almost as tall, if not, a tad bit shorter than his big brother, Luke Valentine.
Clothing[]
He wore a dark blue high-collared jacket and dark blue pants, both of which had white trim. He also wore white gloves and a dark blue cap with a white-and-gold eye design on the front. Jan is notable for having multiple gold piercings: some in each ear, his nose, his eyebrow, his cheek, and two on his lower lip.
Personality[]
Contrary to Luke's calm and "cool" personality, Jan is cynical, disrespectful, and couldn't care less about the situation he's in - whether good or bad, as shown when he's laughing while being surrounded by Walter, Seras, and Integra, with no way out. He is quite obnoxious, and even his brother is quite annoyed by his poor decisions. He's one of the most foul-mouthed characters in the show, literally insulting everyone and everything around him.
He's quite a psychopath, appearing to take pleasure in slaughtering humans, whether they're innocent or not, and even mentions how "hard" he is when doing so. He's full of himself, very confident in his abilities, and that he would win no matter what, thinking that he's smarter than his opponent. He also truly hates someone that he's fighting, even considering raping Integra, killing her, then raping her dead body once again if he and his brother won the war.
Underestimating his opponents, notably the Hellsing Organization - ironically led to his defeat and eventual death.
Ironically, in one scene, Jan realizes that Integra has been smoking very expensive cigars, which he believes is screwed up that she spends her money on such, given how much poverty has stricken the country. This shows Jan's hypocritical manners.
Nevertheless, Jan's vulgar and psychopathic behavior makes him the complete opposite of his brother; a calm, cool, and collected person.

Legacy[]
Days later, after the Valentine Brothers' attack on the Manor, the Hellsing Organisation had a huge impact on their soldiers, buildings, etc; which also forced the Hellsing Organisation to hire Atheists; something Walter commented on. The Hellsing's Information Retrieval is also committed to the Hellsing Organisation's investigation of the Brothers' backgrounds and their associates, to which MI-5 was also asked to assist them through the Round Table Conference.
Relationships[]
Family[]
Luke Valentine[]
While the two are apparently brothers, they are the complete opposite of each other; Luke with his calm and "cool" demeanor, and Jan with his cynical and obnoxious attitude. Despite this, they seem to be very well working with each other - however, not without a couple of arguments, mostly because of Jan's decision, with episode 5 being the main example. However, Jan seems to be quite comfortable with Luke, and Luke's one of the very few people he had never insulted, possibly along with their masters.
Jan's obnoxious behavior also annoys Luke sometimes, with Luke wanting to act cool and clean while wiping the Hellsing Manor out of the Hellsing Organization Special Military Forces, while Jan, however, wants to enjoy every last second of it.
Allies[]
Incognito[]
Neither Jan nor Luke ever interacted with Incognito directly, or at least not on screen, but attacked The Hellsing Mansion on his request.
Incognito's Master[]
In the anime, Jan and Luke ran a club that was used for recruiting and training new vampires. Though they had no direct contact with Incognito's Master, they clearly took their orders from him/her.
Enemies[]
Sir Integra Wingates Hellsing[]
There isn't much of a relationship here, per se, so much as it is Jan's weird, obsessive behavior toward Integra. He seems to displace all of his hatred toward authority and humanity onto her, and Hellsing's refusal to simply give up riled him up even more. Thus, by the time he reaches her, he not only wants to kill her but he also wants to rape her dead body several times. His completely offensive, totally disgusting behavior shocks and disturbs Integra to the point that she can never forgive him for his actions.
Although she asserts herself when they finally meet, she is still unable to control him. By causing his own death, he subverts her authority and has the last laugh. His actions and his personality continue to haunt and taunt her even after he's dead; mostly, he reminds her of her own weaknesses and responsibilities. Fortunately, however, Integra is strong enough to eventually move beyond this.

Abilities[]
Overview[]
The Valentine Brothers were made specifically to eliminate Hellsing, with Jan being created with the purpose of wiping out the entirety of the Hellsing forces other than Alucard. Due to this, he was designed to lead ghouls into combat and did this to great effect - wiping out the primary infantry of Hellsing easily, however, the presence of fledgling vampire Seras Victoria eventually caused his downfall and death.
In this version, Jan also died of a self-destruct ability; But, instead of Millennium's doing, it was done by Incognito or his Master as they were the ones who turned the Valentine Brothers into artificial vampires; via the FREAK chips made by Incognito. It is also unknown if they were given multiple chips like Paul Wilson.
Jan had the standard abilities of an artificial vampire, including enhanced speed, strength, and durability. He was able to survive being shot 6 times in the head (likely with blessed silver bullets, loaded with incendiary mercury rounds) by Integra. While fast, he was significantly slower than his brother Luke and seemed unable to dodge bullets. His regeneration abilities are largely unknown, but he seemed unable to regenerate his torn-off arm.
Weapons[]
Modified P90[]

A Modified P90 is Jan Valentine's signature weapon for much of the series. He is seen using two of these, set to fully automatic when he encounters the Hellsing troops. Jan used these two guns during the Valentine Brothers' raid on the Hellsing compound. He takes down dozens of soldiers using these guns, easily slaughtering the ones his Ghouls hadn't already killed. They are later abandoned during the fight between himself, Walter C. Dornez, and Seras Victoria.
His Army of Ghouls and the Valentine Brothers club[]

Jan's army of Ghouls.
The brothers ran a club that was used by them to hire a bunch of vampires. Jan was the one responsible for the creation of the female vampires, while Luke was responsible for killing Brits, who was a traitor, and possibly, an MI-5 spy. The vampire prostitute who was killed by Alucard in episode 1 was also thought to be a member of the club; she had a necklace that appeared to look like the symbol of the Valentine Brothers.
The club was possibly used to plan the attack and the creation of Jan's army of Ghouls. The club was later shown to be destroyed.

Manga-To-Anime Differences[]
This Jan is exactly like his Manga counterpart, the only difference is that they own a club and serves Incognito and his Master, rather than Millennium.
