Jan Valentine《ヤン・ヴァレンタイン, Yan Varentain》 is a major antagonist in the Hellsing series created by Kohta Hirano. He is also one of the two main protagonists of the Luke and Jan Valentine's Merry Manga supplements, along with Luke Valentine. He is voiced by Wataru Takagi in the Japanese sub and Josh Phillips in the English dub.
Younger brother to Luke Valentine and hard-hitting agent of Millennium, this young, headstrong, and vulgar-mouthed man proclaims himself an overlord, conqueror, and murderer over all of the Hellsing Organisation and its leader, Sir Integra. It is his dedicated field marshaling of a militarized troop of ghoul warriors while dual-wielding a Modified P90 that brought Hellsing to its knees.
Appearance[]
Though of the same height as his brother, his build was noticeably lankier. His skin was fair, and his short wolf-cut hair was black. Jan was notable for having multiple silver piercings: some in each ear, his nose, his eyebrow, his cheek, and two on his lower lip (one of them was later ripped off). The description of Jan in the author's notes at the end of volume 2 jokingly implies that he had a number of hidden piercings. He wore a black high-collared track jacket and pants with red trim, a pair of white shoes and gloves, and a black beanie with an eye of design (colored blue, white, and red pupil) on the front.[a]
Personality[]
Jan was shown to be vulgar, rude, and one of the most foul-mouthed characters in the series, constantly spewing profanity at others and making volatile comments about them.[4] He was also perhaps the most obnoxious, given the fact that he was often loud when he spoke and laughed quite often, even in the face of defeat or death.[5] Unlike his brother, who was usually composed and focused, Jan appeared to not truly be pleased unless he was enjoying himself by causing chaos and destruction.[6] This and his appearance made him the complete opposite of his brother; in comparison to Luke, who had a firm purpose, Jan said, "As long as we get to make the kill and drink the spill... who gives a fuck,"[7] which implies that joining the Last Battalion was only a means in fulfilling his desires.[8] It is implied that he and his family came from an extremely poor background, as Jan spoke about Sir Integra's status as an upper wealth and noted the class division in England.[9]
History[]
Jan Valentine led a force of ghouls into the Hellsing manor when the Round Table Council held a meeting at the Hellsing manor concerning a course of action on the new vampire species. The purpose of Jan's attack was to assassinate the Round Table Council but mainly to create chaos and disorder within Hellsing. He appeared to have succeeded in this latter mission, as during this battle, over three-quarters of the organization's army was killed or turned into ghouls themselves. Jan was the only member of the attacking army to ever reach the high-security meeting, as the rest of the ghouls were destroyed by Walter C. Dornez and Seras Victoria. There, Sir Integra and the other Round Table members congratulated him before opening fire and riddling him with bullets.
He was later seen being interrogated by Walter. When questioned by Integra about his origins, he reminded her that the chips in his body were still transmitting information to his commanders, including everything that was being said. He then asked her if she thought that considering he and his brother didn't succeed in destroying Hellsing, and that his superiors knew that he was about to tell them everything he knew, they would let him live. Immediately after that, he bursts into flames. As a final, mixed act of disrespect and help, he gave Integra the middle finger and uttered the word "Millennium" before disintegrating.
Relationships[]
Family[]
- Luke Valentine: Although the two were brothers, they shared very little in common in terms of both appearance and personality.[10] Luke, in his own words, is "quiet, focused, and cool" and was by far the more articulate and reserved of the two. Jan, on the other hand, was volatile and rude, constantly spewing forth random profanity and making lewd (often disturbing) comments. The gap between the brothers is further emphasized by their choice of weaponry. While Jan used two very modern guns, Luke's were rather old-school. Luke can be viewed as the brains of the operation and the primary decision maker, while Jan was the muscle, being the one who commanded the ghoul army.
Enemies[]
- Sir Integra: Jan made several vulgar and rude comments to Integra that often result in very disturbing comments (i.e., threats of rape, even after death).[11] His hatred of her appears to be due to the fact that the two are on opposite spectrums within the social class, noting the big division and how all Integra did to contribute was to smoke overpriced cigars.[12]
Powers, Abilities, and Weapons[]
Artificial Vampire | |
---|---|
The Valentine Brothers were made specifically to eliminate Hellsing, with Jan being created with the purpose of wiping out the entirety of the Hellsing forces other than Alucard.[13][14] Due to this, he was designed to lead ghouls into combat and did this to great effect, wiping out the primary infantry of Hellsing easily until he was faced with Walter C. Dornez and Seras Victoria.[15] As an Artificial Vampire, Jan presented a great threat to those he faced due to his twisted and chaotic nature. | |
Superhuman Strength: Jan was able to kick off a durable door within the hallways of the Hellsing manor without any visible damage;[16] in the OVA, he blew it away with his kick.[17] He was also able to shrug off Seras Victoria with his elbow, which stunned her for a period of time.[18] | |
Superhuman Agility: He was able to escape an explosion caused by Harkonnen at close range and later leaped over Walter at a great distance.[19][20] In the OVA, after knocking back Seras, he hopped back towards the hall entrance of the manor with great height and reflex.[21] | |
Superhuman Endurance: He kept on running towards the Round Table room even after his arm was caught by Walter's wires, which he forcibly tore off, laughing manically in the process and after.[22] Later, he was able to survive being shot dozens of times by the Round Table Knights.[23][24] | |

Superhuman Accuracy: In the OVA, Jan accurately gunned down many surviving members of the Hellsing London Base military.[25] Also in the OVA, Jan's P90s did not show any signs that they were silenced, as noted by the muzzle flashes seen and the loud rapport of his gun while firing, despite the large silencers mounted on both his guns; because of this, they might just be barrel extensions, enhancing Jan's accuracy. |
Modified P90 | |
The FN P90 is a personal defense weapon manufactured by FN Herstal. The P90 and its 5.7×28mm ammunition were developed by the Belgian company FN Herstal in response to NATO requests for a replacement for the 9×19mm Parabellum cartridge and associated pistols and submachine guns. Jan wielded two heavily modified P90s as his weapon of choice, later abandoning them after the fight between himself, Walter C. Dornez, and Seras Victoria. In the OVA, the P90s were modified by FALKEN'S SON, presumably a firearms manufacturer helmed by the Valentine Brothers.[26] |
Concept and Creation[]
Hirano stated that Jan is the easiest character to draw (even to the extent of his death) and that he thought he was the most human-like character within the series (aside from Integra[27]); he remarked about how fun it was drawing him as he goes rampaging as he pleases, describing him as a "smelly thug."[28] In the opposite of Zorin Blitz (who is Hirano's most hated character[29]), Hirano stated that Jan is one of his favorites.[30] His design and behavior are perhaps based on the second antagonist of The Legends of Vampire Hunter; both of them share many identical design qualities with one another.
Name[]
His name in Japanese, ヤン・ヴァレンタイン (Yan Varentain), is often translated literally as "Yan Valentine" (e.g., anime booklets, OVA). The alternative translation for this name is Jan Valentine, which is used by Dark Horse Comics and the later-released 2015 Blu-ray booklet of the OVA; the first name is still pronounced as "Yan/Yon" because the "j" sound makes a "y" sound in German. Jan's sketch in the middle of volume 2 wrote his name as "Jane Valentine." On the imprint of Jan's P90 in the OVA, "Valentine" is spelled as "Valentain."[31]

Trivia[]
- The booklet of OVA II noted that despite their claims of being "brothers," it is unclear if they are actually related.
- While Luke was noted to have a rank within Millennium as "Warrant Officer," Jan's rank within Millennium remains unknown (presumably to be of the same rank as his brother, Warrant Officer).
- It is interesting to note that the nationalities of the brothers are never made clear, although it seems they are from the United States, judging by their dialogue in the manga, which is devoid of British phrases such as "wanker" (which at least Jan would've used at some point), or, if they were thought to be British, the fact that they aren't at all fazed that one of Millennium's plans is to wipe out London in what can be thought of as a terrorist attack.
- In the OVA, his quote "Up up! Down down! Left right left right!" refers to the famous Konami code (Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, Start).[45] In Contra for the NES, typing this code on the title screen gives you 30 lives. The manga simply has Jan bragging about his "God mode" cheat.[46]
