The Hellsing 13mm Anti-Freak Combat Pistol "Jackal"対化物戦闘用13mm拳銃「ジャッカル」, Taibakemonosentō-yō Jūsanmiri Kenjū Jakkaru, shortened to: "The Jackal"》 is an extremely powerful handgun and one of the personal firearms wielded by Alucard.

It is a weapon specifically designed for Alucard by Walter C. Dornez, being the latter's second personal handgun and his favorite, effectively topping the .454 Casull in terms of firepower and the handgun that he had been solely using until then (after which, he proceeded to dual-wield). The Jackal is loaded with customized 13mm armor-piercing rounds with casings from pure Macedonium silver, making it highly effective against both monsters and a Regenerator.

Profile[]

Noted to have been using a new type of custom rounds that differed from the modified .454 Casull rounds,[2] the Jackal was a handgun designed to counter the Iscariot Agency's cybernetic Regenerator technology—which they used on Alexander Anderson—it was loaded with six[3] massive 13mm armor-piercing explosive rounds;[4][5][6] it had a length of 390mm,[3][7][8][9] a curiously heavy weight of 16kg,[3][7][8][9] and a black gunmetal construction. In mockery of Alexander Anderson's gloves, the words "Jesus Christ is in Heaven Now" were engraved onto each side of the upper assembly.[1][10] Its unique design made it seem as if it did not have a pistol slide; however, the entire upper assembly was the slide,[11][10] and there were thus no creases or lines on the top part of the gun, which made room for the engraving. The gun moved only a minimal distance compared to other guns. The breech also faced the left instead of the right, so it was more of a sister gun to the .454 Casull. Compared to the .454 Casull, the Jackal was distinctly lacking in terms of aesthetic features and was devoid of any contours on the side or frame save for the grip.

Bullets and Rounds[]

The Jackal fired huge, customized,[2] armor-piercing, 13mm explosive rounds.[4][12] The rounds were jacketed with a casing of pure Macdeonium silver and featured an explosive tip that contained a charge of pre-blessed mercury.[13][14] However, the size of the 13mm rounds limited the Jackal's magazine capacity to six rounds. The gunpowder used "Marvells Chemicals Cartridge N.N.A.9,"[13][15] though the exact nature of the propellant mix was undefined. The bullets were designed primarily to be used against Iscariot's top agent, Alexander Anderson,[16] who shrugged off the modified .454 Casull's rounds with ease.[17][18] The Jackal's rounds had proven powerful enough to negate Anderson's great regenerative abilities and blow off parts of him,[19] while also being an extremely effective anti-freak combat weapon in general.[20]

The power of the Jackal was much greater than the .454 Casull's. The incredible power of comparable .50 caliber and .500 caliber rounds (delivering energy in excess of 4000-7500 J) is still designed for humans; since the Marvell Cartridge used by the Jackal was designed for Alucard, it was likely much more powerful. It was made especially for fighting Anderson, who was stubborn enough to survive bullets from the modified .454 Casull rounds.[17] During Alucard and Anderson's duel in London, the Jackal was able to nearly sever Anderson's left arm.[19] Later on, a single shot was able to blow Anderson's head completely off from the lower jaw up, despite the bullet striking him on only the left side of the face.[21]

Usage[]

The Jackal was the result of Alucard's discussion with Walter over a brand new handgun[22] after his .454 Casull proved largely useless[17] against Alexander Anderson.[6] The butler delivered in full with the creation of the Jackal; in fact, the inscription on its side implies that it was meant especially to end Anderson's life. Alucard would repeatedly express his satisfaction with the new firearm, declaring that it was "perfect."[23][24] Ever since then, until the fight with Walter, Alucard had dual-wielded the Jackal with the .454 Casull.[25][26] In an attempt to catch Walter by surprise from behind, Alucard fires the Jackal only for it to explode, revealing that a bomb was placed inside the Jackal by Walter, who manufactured the weapon while he was working as Millennium's spy; specifically, a remote control was designed by Walter and used by The Professor to self-destruct the Jackal.[27]

Name[]

The Jackal is named after the eponymous antagonist of The Day of the Jackal, a famous English-French movie released in 1973. In the movie, the Jackal was a fictional assassin hired to kill Charles de Gaulle, France's president between 1959 and 1969. As it is revealed in one of Alucard's dreams in volume 5, the Jackal (taking the form of Bruce Willis) is the spirit of the pistol named after him. In this dream, the Jackal (Edward Fox) even successfully kills the criticized remake's leading actor, Bruce Willis, warning Alucard that he let the imposter too close.[28]

Trivia[]

  • The Jackal has a left-facing case ejector, something most guns do not have, and this makes it appear as though the gun is meant to be used with the .454 Casull. However, Alucard is almost always shown holding the Jackal in his right hand and the .454 Casull with his left, causing the case ejectors to face each other (which would throw spent shell casings into his face). Hirano is fully aware of this and states that he does not care about the accuracy of the weapons.[29]
    • In regards to the Jackal's seemingly infinite ammunition and questionable functionality, Hirano asserts, "The Jackal that Alucard uses is not even close to being accurate and functional," and jokingly remarks that it also does not have a maximum ammo capacity.[29]
  • The Jackal's ammunition, contrary to popular belief, is not larger than the .50 BMG rounds, as the rounds shown during Walter's explanation shows the real size of each bullet, which is a little bigger than a .50 AE. However, the main source of the bullet's power is the explosive nature of each shell and not the force of the bullet itself. This allows it to decimate walls and armor, as shown throughout the show, possibly causing more destructive power to flesh targets than the .50 BMG.
