The Hellsing Arms .454 Casull Automatic.454カスルカスタムオトマチック, Yongoyon Kasūru Kasutamu Ōtomachikku, shortened to: "The .454 Casull"》 is a very powerful handgun and one of the personal firearms wielded by Alucard.

This weapon is the first custom handgun made by the Hellsing Agency and was specifically designed by Walter C. Dornez. It is essentially a very big semi-automatic pistol, loaded with special rounds that were made out of silver obtained from melted holy relics, with an exploding property as well, making for a rather devastating rounds against the legions of the night. It is too heavy and unwieldy for a human to use, yet a perfect match for Alucard's strength.

Profile[]

The .454 Casull is a semi-automatic magnum pistol, based on two pre-WW1 handgun designs by Colt: the M1903 and M1905 pistols (the early versions of the M1911). The overall design of the .454 Casull is simple, using the Browning short recoil mechanism; its most recognizable feature is its long slide, counteracting the weapon's heavy recoil with its weight. The Casull is 335mm long, weighs 4kg, and has a magazine capacity of seven 13mm explosive steel rounds.[2][3][4][5][6] The barrel is 10" long[7] and finished with titanium nitride, which gives it a characteristic gold color. In some close-ups, one may note that the hammer is never fully cocked, indicative of either a double-action or fast-action mechanism.

Bullets and Rounds[]

The pistol fires custom-made 13mm explosive steel rounds (which were modified from the original .454 rounds[2][8][4]), with the steel rounds bearing a core made from the melted silver cross from Lanchester Cathedral.[6][4] They are used in a seven-round[3] single-stack magazine, being able to kill the undead in just a single shot.[9][4] The .454 is twice as powerful as the .44 Magnum and even more powerful than the .50 AE of the Desert Eagle; it is powerful enough to penetrate NIJ Level II and NIJ Level IIIA vests, having a muzzle velocity of approximately 580m/s, while a Level II is only rated for .357 JSP, which grants 436 m/s, and a Level IIIA is rated for .357 SIG FMJ Flat Nose, with a velocity of 448 m/s.

Usage[]

As a part of his equipment to be used against the undead, Alucard carries around the .454 Casull. Up until the Badrick confrontation, he effectively used the .454 Casull against the vampiric Vicar in the Cheddar Village incident and the Huger and Jessica fiasco; Alexander Anderson's strong regenerative capabilities—which nullified the .454 Casull's power—led to the creation of the Jackal by Walter C. Dornez.[10] Ever since then, until the fight with Walter, Alucard had dual-wielded the Jackal with the .454 Casull.[11] As a result, the last time the .454 Casull was ever seen was in the battle against Walter (against Luke Valentine's manipulated corpse).[12]

Name[]

In the original fan translation of volume 2, the translators incorrectly translated Walter's line referring to the gun, making him call it the "Joshua," even though the katakana reads "カスール" (kasuru), which would be the correct Katakana for "Casull." Since then, many fans have perpetuated the name, so much so that ADV (the official European distributor for the anime) called it "Joshua" on their official website, the special features, and the booklets on their DVD release. Regardless, this name is incorrect, as it never appears in the original Japanese version of either the manga, anime, OVA, or any official translations of Hellsing, not even ADV's, as they use Geneon's dub and subtitles.

Trivia[]

  • The Jackal has a left-facing case ejector, something most guns do not have, and this makes it appear as though the gun is meant to be used with the .454 Casull. However, Alucard is almost always shown holding the Jackal in his right hand and the .454 Casull with his left, causing the case ejectors to face each other (which would throw spent shell casings into his face). Hirano is fully aware of this and states that he does not care about the accuracy of the weapons.[13]
  • The inscription on the .454 Casull featured on volume 1 of the Hellsing manga reads "Hellsing 13mm clockwork Giant PANDAS."
