HELLSING (ヘルシング, Herushingu) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Kohta Hirano serialized in Shonengahosha's seinen manga magazine Young King OURs.
The series first premiered in April 1997 and ended in September 2008, with the individual chapters collected into ten tankobon volumes by Shonengahosha. From 2002 to 2006, Hirano released a six-chapter prequel series, Hellsing: The Dawn, in supplements of Young King OURs. The series was licensed for English-language release in North America by Dark Horse Comics. Dark Horse Comics compiled 10 volumes of the manga into 3 deluxe editions and later re-released the series in a "second edition" using the revised translation from the deluxe edition special.
A thirteen-episode anime television series adaptation by Gonzo, directed by Umanosuke Iida and Yasunori Urata, with a screenplay by Chiaki J. Konaka, was broadcast on Fuji TV from October 2001 to January 2002. A ten-episode original video animation (OVA), titled Hellsing: Ultimate, was produced by Geneon (later NBCUniversal), with the intent of following the manga storyline more closely than the anime series, and ran from February 2006 to December 2012. In 2021, a live-action adaptation of Hellsing was reported by Deadline to be in production, produced by Amazon and written by Derek Kolstad of John Wick fame.
Summary[]
- Main article: Story Arcs
The Hellsing Agency, a secret branch of the British government, has long been battling supernatural threats to keep the people safe from creatures of the night. Its current leader, Sir Integra Hellsing, controls her own personal army to eliminate the undead beings, but even her highly trained soldiers pale in comparison to her most trusted vampire exterminator, Alucard, who is actually a powerful vampire himself. Along with Integra's mysterious butler and Alucard's new vampire minion, Seras Victoria, the Hellsing Agency must face not only regular ghouls and vampires but also a rivaling secret branch of the Vatican and a mysterious group of madmen spawned by a certain war over 55 years ago.
Protagonists[]
- Alucard: An enigmatic figure belonging to the Hellsing Agency, as well as being its strongest soldier due to his capabilities as a vampire himself.
- Seras Victoria: Formerly a member of the London Police, she now acts as a soldier of the Hellsing Agency under the guidance of Alucard, after choosing to become a vampire on the verge of death.
- Integra Hellsing: A young noblewoman, she is the head and last member of the Hellsing family. She doubles as the leader of the Hellsing Agency, and Alucard's "master."
Profile[]
By March 2009, the total circulation for the Hellsing series had exceeded 4 million;[4] in November 2007, the ninth volume was among the top 10 volumes sold according to Japan's monthly sales rankings. For three consecutive weeks, the tenth volume of Hellsing managed to sell 97,352 in its first week,[5] 76,479 in its second week,[6] and 22,749 in its third week (dropping from #4 to #24 in charts).[7] The series was also ranked 22nd in the 2006 Top 100 Japanese Media Arts within the manga category.[8]
Dark Horse Comics announced that the Hellsing series had shipped 20 thousand copies since the initial release of volume 1 in the profile page of volume 5 on their website.[9] In 2005, the sixth and seventh volumes of Hellsing ranked among Diamond Comics Distributors' list of the top 48 manga volumes sold in the United States for the year.[10] The profile of volume 10 on Dark Horse Comics' official website stated that there are over half a million copies of the Hellsing series in print.[11] For five consecutive weeks, Hellsing's tenth volume was listed on the New York Times Manga Best Seller List from May 30 until July 3, 2010.[12][13][14][15]
Publication[]
During publication in Young King OURs, Hellsing ran for 95 chapters (known as "Order"), which were condensed into 89 for the volume releases. For the first three volumes, an old work of Hirano's, Crossfire, was added in to fill the unexpected low page count that the series ended up having. The series was licensed for an English release by Dark Horse Comics in 2003, releasing 10 volumes from December 2003,[16] to May 2010.[17] In January 2020, Dark Horse Comics announced that they would re-release the series in a three-volume deluxe edition, condensing the series into 3 hardcover volumes consisting of over 600 pages each in an oversized format;[18] it ran from July 2020[19] to June 2021.[20] Dark Horse Comics later announced a re-run of the Hellsing series (dubbed as the "second edition" series),[21] which was published from November 2023[22] to April 2025[23] using the revised deluxe edition translation.
Production[]
Seeking to create what he described as a "daring-action story," Hirano created Hellsing: The Legends of Vampire Hunter.[24] The title was "Hellsing" because of the main character being a descendant of Abraham Van Helsing (also while joking that he described himself as "hell"). With the concerning reception of the manga and it being considered something that Hirano didn't have any intention to do, the series was later canceled as Hirano deemed it a "failure."[25] After being brought to Young King OURs, Hirano thought of bringing back Hellsing but "removing the daring side and continue to show this strange universe by focusing more on the action."[26]
Alucard was conceptualized as a "man wearing a trench coat up to his neck as some kind of neck-protector, and the rest of his body acts to block any damage including physical, and from bullets." However, Hirano thought that the character ended up looking bad; so he switched his trench coat with a long coat and made him powerful enough that he doesn't need a bulletproof vest to cover him for his return in the new Hellsing series.[27] He took some inspiration from John Lennon and a "little bit of Vash the Stampede."[28] Hirano stated that he wanted to make a story with gunplay, but that a story of vampires with guns would not work with Alucard being portrayed as a "formulaic vampire," so Hirano added him a hat and a long coat, stating: "It's still dark and ominous, but just more suited to his behavior. I always come up with the characters before the story." Hirano said that, due to the "dark, desolate story," he wanted to create someone who made the series "a bit warmer" and a female character involved as well, so he created the character of Seras Victoria, who offered the opportunity "for both of those at the same time," adding that she is "the only one who stands out from the darkness."[29] When creating Integra, it was Hirano's intention to make her the most "human-like" character in the series.[30] He described her as someone having a skin tone similar to that of an Indian.[31]
Hirano has since been writing vampire-type stories since he was a student; first expanding on his ideas and images about a vampire. Writing the series, Hirano thought that it was best to write the series in an eccentric style rather than an orthodox style given the narrative setting in which the series is set in. Explaining the structure of the story, Hellsing first starts with Seras' point of view but later changes into an all-out battle with no focus on a specific character.[32] However, the root of the story was about Alucard being defeated at the hands of a human.[33] The chapter titles were derived from famous video games of which Hirano is a fan of. The range of video games derived from is wide, from arcade titles to PC games, consumer titles, overseas ported software, and even minor titles of fairly old domestic and foreign PC games.[34] The names of the characters were written in Katakana (a Japanese phonetic script used to transcribe and approximate English sounds), which led to name translation being a subject of controversy among fans. When he was asked by the producers who handled the English dub of the OVA, Hirano simply stated that he made up the name to sound foreign.[35]
Given the atypical universe at the beginning of Hellsing, Hirano and OURs wanted to test the reception with readers; if it's not positive, then it'll be canceled but if it turns out to be a hit, then it'd continue; Hirano gave this explanation as to why the start of Hellsing he described as "a little disjointed." Much to his surprise as he did not expect any kind of success, the first few chapters of Hellsing turned out to be a hit, so Hellsing was serialized.[36] Up to chapter 3, the filler chapters are only meant to be sort of an introduction to the world of Hellsing. Hirano stated that the earlier chapters were "very generic" due to the chapters themselves being a "monster-of-the-week" type. During the development of chapter 4, Hirano thought about a rival agency to Hellsing, so Iscariot was introduced, based on an agency of the same name in his previous work, Crossfire.[37]
The introduction of a rival agency meant that Alucard must have a rival, so Alexander Anderson was created. Initially, he also thought about putting The Captain for the role in Millennium's side but concluded that he was too weak.[38] Hirano joked that as revenge for the manuscript of Angel Dust not being sent back to him by the publisher, he wrote in Anderson as a character.[39] He felt that there were too many characters, so canceled the rest of Iscariot members that he had planned to introduce as the story wasn't about Hellsing and Iscariot specifically. The other personality of Yumie Takagi, Yumiko, didn't appear because he thought it would be too complex for her other personality to be fully utilized in the storyline of Hellsing.[40] In the case of Heinkel Wulf's gender, Hirano stated that she is a futanari.[41] For the characters in Millennium, most of their design were based on previous works that Hirano did back during his doujinshi-artist days. The character of The Major; his design, including possibly his real name, was based on a character from "Coyote," a hentai-centric manga Hirano did during his early years.[42] Hirano based The Major's motif on American actor Philip Seymour Hoffman.[43] As a character, Schrödinger was created to be the ultimate tool to defeat Alucard as Hirano saw no other way to ultimately defeat Alucard in one shot.[44] The character of Pip Vernedead was also based on a character of the same name in Coyote, and he was created to be paired up with Seras to balance out the dynamic of the cast, also as Hirano saw that the combo pairings of Alucard and Seras weren't possible; so he paired Seras with Vernedead while stuck Integra with Alucard.[45] Hirano noted that Vernedead was supposed to die early on in the series.[46]
Because of the nature of the series being about vampires and the supernaturals, Hirano chose to base the location on England as he thought that it wouldn't make sense anywhere else; adding to the involvement of the Vatican in the work, Hirano was confident in this decision. However, with the "Nazi" aspect of the series, he stated that it's something he thought about putting in his work long before Hellsing was conceptualized. In order to draw certain landscapes within London, Hirano traveled to England in order to take pictures for reference. Hirano noted that he had always been fascinated with the old medieval wars between Catholics and Protestants.[47] When asked about the historical references and characters being present in his manga, Hirano said that it's complicated as he doesn't consider himself as someone with a lot of culture, and said that he's just an "Otaku" and all these references come from what he sees and reads out of "otaku passion." He also said that he does not do any specific research on the references he displayed throughout the Hellsing series.[48]
During the later half of serialization, Hirano submitted "half-assed" manuscripts because he couldn't make it to deadline. Hirano never intended for Hellsing to be serialized for more than 10 years, initially planning to release one volume a year. Though the ending of the story was coherent from the beginning, he regretted his portrayal of Anderson as he thought that he didn't give him any room to develop his character. After volume 8, Hirano felt that he became too hasty which caused the fights to end quicker than expected, which is why he thought that Alucard vs. Anderson and The Captain vs. Seras Victoria was better in terms of battle presentation.[49] Trying to avoid stereotypes, Hirano's motives were that he cannot tolerate an ending "in which the two fight together, become friends, and live happily ever after," rather, Hellsing's resolution is death, and it is not the kind of work that keeps the defeated alive after the resolution has been reached.[50] He was, however, happy with how The Major was portrayed in the series.[51] The popularity in overseas surprised Hirano very much as he thought that the manga would only appeal to Japanese viewers, stating that he drew many things that are not considered "taboo" in Japan but taboo in others, so he does expect things to be revised in many other countries.[52]

Trivia[]
- The longest period without any Hellsing volumes released is 1 year and 7 months. The serialization of tankobon volumes in Japan also started a year and 4 months after chapter 1 appeared in an issue of Young King OURs.
- At the start of the chapter, on top of the chapter names written in English, is a word written in katakana; the katakana appeared in every chapter until volume 5, where it was dropped, brought back, and once again dropped. The last time the katakana appeared was in chapter 53.
