Father Ronaldロナルド神父, Ronarudo Shinpu[a] is a supporting character in the Hellsing series created by Kohta Hirano. He is voiced by Osamu Saka in the Japanese sub and William Frederick Knight in the English dub.

He is Enrico Maxwell's right-hand man, and the second-in-command of the Iscariot Agency.

Appearance[]

Ronald is an older, tall man with gray hair and a bushy mustache. His hair is short, slicked to the back, and his mustache is stylized, with the bottom being curved down and ends sharply. He also has blue pupils.

When meeting Anderson, Ronald wears an all-white attire, which includes a white cassock vest with grey trim under a beige cassock overcoat with purple trim, white trousers with a pair of black shoes, and white gloves. Later in the Imperial War Museum, Ronald switches to a black cassock shirt, black trousers, and shoes while maintaining the gloves. In the meeting between Iscariot, the Queen of England, and the Round Table Council, he now supports a black cassock overcoat. In all of his appearances, he maintains a pair of circle-framed glasses with gold temples supporting no rims.

Personality[]

Though mostly playing a neutral role in Hellsing, Ronald is also a religious fanatic of Iscariot. He acts as a messenger, being the one who delivered the notice of Hellsing's doing in Badrick to Alexander Anderson at the request of Maxwell. In doing so, he states that the Vatican does not back down from a challenge by heretics, essentially allowing Anderson to fight Alucard if he had to. Based off of Maxwell's flashback, Ronald seems to be the one who brings orphans to Anderson's. He's also gentle, informing Maxwell of his new home.

History[]

He was the one who had informed Father Alexander Anderson of a vampire attack in Badrick, Northern Ireland, and of the Hellsing Organisation's involvement in containing the attack. He is seen later at the London Imperial War Museum escorting Enrico Maxwell to meet Sir Integra Hellsing to discuss the issue of Millennium. At the conference that Hellsing and Iscariot held with the Queen of England, which quickly turned into a declaration of war meeting at the arrival of Schrödinger. Not much is known about him afterward, though it can be assumed that he did not take place in the Battle of London and became one of the few Iscariot members survivors known by the end of the series.

Relationships[]

  • Enrico Maxwell: Ronald was the one who brought a young Maxwell to his new home at Ferdinant Lukes and his new teacher, Alexander Anderson. Over the course of years, Maxwell became an exceptional student who would climb the ranks of the Vatican, later landing him a place at the spot of bishops. Ronald became his advisor and right-hand man, usually standing besides him or sending messages on behalf of Maxwell.
  • Alexander Anderson: Ronald brings children without a home to Anderson's orphan, like he did Maxwell. They share the same hatred over protestants and heretics, and Ronald was the one who encouraged violence to Anderson had he ever come across Hellsing, as the Vatican does not back down from challenges by heretics. Though overall, they seem to be neutral toward each other, as when Anderson saw Ronald, he couldn't be less bothered until Ronald involved him in a situation involving vampires, which piqued Anderson's interest.

Concept and Creation[]

Ronald was a character derived from Hirano's previous Hentai works.

Name[]

He was not named in the manga and doesn't have a speaking role in the anime. In the OVA credits, he's referred to as "Father." It was not until the booklet of the OVA Blu-ray box of I-V that he was named "Papa Ronald." Across fan sources and translations, he's referred to as "Rinaldo," "Renaldo," or "Ronaldo."

Footnotes[]

Notes[]

  1. The name "Ronald" appears in the booklets for the OVA; it may or may not be considered canon, as he wasn't named in the manga.
